How to nail an acting audition
Mar 04, 2016How to nail an acting audition
There are many ways to nail an acting audition, but unless you understand exactly how your scene fits into the movie, play or TV show - you may flounder - and we don't want that do we?
Use this simple techique to fully understand the bigger picture.
Play the nail NOT the house - can you see that clearly now...?
A lot of actors believe they have to answer evryting bout the scene - all at the same time - this is NOT the case. In fact if you are ever feeling overwhelmed by a scene - usually it's because you are playing and layering in too too much of the scene. Keep it simple.
Lessen your load. Play the beats of the scene. The Nails. Nothing else.
Before the Audition
Let’s talk about attitude.
You need to walk into that room prepared, without a care in the world. Auditioning is an opportunity to do some acting - and that’s one thing you love doing more than anything else in the world, right?
So point your mind away from "getting the job", "being successful", "making money", and all those other distractions we have ALL done. (I know I have)
Focus on delivering your authentic performance. Express your love of acting. If you do that, you’re halfway there.
The Waiting Room
Some actors get thrown too easily - They arrive at the casting director’s office and discover 17 other actors who look just like they do - I once did this at the RNT auditioning for a Terry Johnson play - I was to up for the part of Kenneth Williams - All the actors looked like him, sounded like him, (And he is weird - If you don't know him here's a great clip) and were rehearsing in the wings - the noise - the pain...it was horrendous. It was like being in a scene from a Coen brothers movie!
They look different!
Some actors are stunned when the other actors are 10 years younger or a different ethnicity.
Who cares?
They are NOT your concern. The audition is about you, not them. So keep your focus on you and on your personal power. then you will nail that audition - easily and quickly - and honestly.
Try saying this to yourself on the inside
"You are enough. You can do this. I give you permission to play and permission to win."
The Future
Auditions are not always about getting the gig on that particular day. Do well so the casting director becomes a "Raving fan" and brings you in on a regular basis - in the future - careers last a lifetime, right? The more that happens, the more likely you are to become a working actor. More of the time, get the picture?
Casting directors talk - if you're not right for this - they will get you back for that. Or recommend you to one of their friends...
Remember the Facebook rule.
Facebook reckons we each have at least 150 friends we connect with. If you enter a room with a CD, an Assistant, A reader, A cameraman/woman and a director - that's 5 people. That's 750 people that might recommend you. And they do.
Understand this
Casting directors want you to do a good job.
They are dying for you to blow them away. They’re on your side. Help them make a decison - let them decide.
Then Let It Go
When you leave that room let it go - the entire experience - yes ALL of it. It's out of your hands now. If you struggle with this, and many actors do - check out TAM - it's so easy to do.
Please share this and tell your friends.
