How to cry in your acting auditions in 2023
Feb 20, 2023You book more acting work by NOT crying in your acting auditions! Even in in 2023!
WTF!!
Well, crying on cue CAN be a problem, can't it?
So try this. Do not TRY to cry at all because it's not what they are looking for.
At all.
The best way to make it work is to create a living breathing human being. Someone we can recognise, empathise with, feel for and root for.
And we all want that kind of connection on TV or film, do we not?
Isn't that what we all want? That kind of magic? You can do this too...

Step 1: Make sure you understand the nature of the character you are playing.
Step 2 : Take the time to figure out what pressure is piling in on your character. How specifically does he or she experience and handle pressure? Successfully or not?
Step 3 : Make sure you do what people do when they feel as if they are about to cry - they hold it all in and try and push back the feelings or hold them down.
Most people do NOT want others to see them vulnerable. They try and hold back the flood. It's the wrestling with this that makes us empathise and connect.
The 2 Type Of Mistakes We Make
Most actors are either a...
Number 1 Mistake Maker : Not showing enough emotion.
Number 2 Mistake Maker : Showing way too much emotion.
So what do you do?
*******************
Solution - focus on the specifics of the scene. The specific beats, the character actions and the intentions and obstacles in the scene. Forget about trying to cry.
Show the inner struggling, so WE the audience can sense the pain you're going through and then we'll feel your pain and we'll get your story.
Get the picture?
When you focus on the specific beats of the scene you create a rich, dynamic and complex experience that makes Casting Directors watch you...like a....?

So...
...if you're a Number 1 Mistake Maker and accessing/ feeling emotion is hard for you - it doesn't matter a bit if the emotion (crying, rage, sadness) shows up in your acting audition or not - you'll still deliver a structured precise performance with a "holy crap that was one hotsh*t scene man!" result that makes Casting Directors take real notice of you.
And if you’re a Number 2 Mistake Maker and emotion is easy for you to feel and show, you just deliver the same structured, precise performance and you will still get a specific"holy crap that was one hotsh*t scene batman!" reaction. You just add your own easy to get...emotion.
Magic Thing
Once you let go of chasing emotions, they often just...show up anyway.
